LCD panel
Also called LVDS panel, eDP panel, monitor panel.
The glass is the expensive part of a monitor. It is reusable only if you write down the model number printed on the metal back (a string like M270HVN02) and match it to a controller board. The scaler that came with the TV is usually not that controller.
If you are new to this category
Speakers, lamps, heaters, and displays. To test a speaker, touch a 1.5 V cell to the terminals for a moment. The cone should click once. A heater can start a fire if you remove the part that was supposed to shut it off.
Heat and bright light usually mean household voltage. Unplug first. If the original safety part is open, find out why before you replace it.
Touch a 1.5 volt cell to the two terminals for a moment only. A good cone clicks and moves. A scrape means the coil is rubbing, which will sound bad even if it still makes noise. The ohms printed on the magnet, often 4, 6, or 8, tell you what amplifier it expects.
CCFL backlight inverters. Old LCD panels use a cold-cathode lamp driven at about a kilovolt of AC. The inverter is small and looks harmless.
Mains voltage. Line voltage, and the DC bus just after the rectifier, both kill. A disconnected cord is not a discharged supply.
| What to look for | Usual figure |
|---|---|
| Interface | LVDS on older panels, eDP on newer ones. The connector and the voltage (often 12 V for the logic, plus a backlight enable) are specific. |
| Backlight | LED strings with their own driver, or a CCFL and an inverter on old units. CCFL inverters are high voltage. |
Volts are electrical pressure, amps are how much current is flowing, and ohms are how hard the part resists that flow. A higher voltage than the part was built for is how salvage parts die on the bench. If a cell in the table says “read the stamp”, that stamp is the whole specification.
What people actually use it for
- A monitor, once a matching controller arrives
- The diffuser sheets as lighting plastic, if the panel itself is cracked
Leave this one when
The glass is cracked, or you did not record the model number and the original boards are already gone.
Buying a new one is the better idea when
A used monitor that already works, if you did not capture the model number. The glass alone is not a display.
How to tell if this one still works
Power the original monitor logic board. If the set was scrapped for a bad backlight, the logic may still be fine and the LED strips may be the actual fault.
Tools you will want: Camera, before disassembly, Matching controller later.
Words on this page
Short meanings, so the rest of the entry is readable if you are not already doing this every weekend.
- CCFL
- The thin fluorescent lamp behind older flat screens. Its driver makes a high voltage. Do not run that board loose on the bench.
- LVDS
- The wiring standard older laptop and monitor panels use to receive a picture. Without the matching controller board, the glass is not a display.
Where people actually find it
5 notes, most useful first. “Leave it” means the part is in that machine and you should not take it: it is dangerous, worn out, or only useful if you already know that exact repair.
| From | Call | How many | How often | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCD monitor | Prize | 1 | always | The glass. |
| LCD television | Worth it | 1 | always | The glass. |
| Digital kitchen scale | Leave it | 1 | always | The display. |
| Digital camera | Leave it | 1 | usually | The rear. |
| Blood-pressure monitor | Leave it | 1 | usually | The display. |
- In this particular machine
- LVDS or eDP, model-specific. The number is the whole salvage.
- Where to look
- The glass.
- How to get it out
- Leave the panel in the frame until you have a controller in mind.
- The condition to expect
- Cracks end it.
- In this particular machine
- Same rule as a monitor: the model number is the part.
- Where to look
- The glass.
- How to get it out
- Photograph it.
- The condition to expect
- Cracked is scrap.
- In this particular machine
- Bare glass with an elastomeric connector. Not a module you can talk to.

- The display.
- How to get it out
- Leave it.
- The condition to expect
- Works only in the original zebra-strip arrangement.
- In this particular machine
- A small panel on a flex, model-specific.
- Where to look
- The rear.
- How to get it out
- Not a general display.
- The condition to expect
- Fine and useless.
