Brushless DC motor
Also called BLDC, EC motor, hub motor, spindle motor.
Three-phase windings and an electronic commutator that you must supply. Excellent life. Useless as a two-wire motor unless you keep the driver it came with.
If you are new to this category
These parts spin, push, or pump. A motor is a machine that turns electricity into turning. Some start turning as soon as you connect a battery. Others look identical and will not move until a small circuit tells them which coil to power next. The label, or the number of wires, is how you tell them apart.
Count the thick wires before you apply power. Two wires usually mean a brushed motor that can run from a battery. Three thick wires usually mean a brushless motor. Keep the board that came with a brushless motor.
This is usually a brushless motor. Connecting a battery across two of the wires only makes it twitch, and holding it there heats the winding. Keep the small plug as well. Those thin wires are often the sensors that tell the board where the shaft is.
Lithium-ion cells. A punctured, crushed, overcharged, or reverse-charged cell vents and burns hot enough to ignite the bench. Swollen pouches are already failed.
Strong neodymium magnets. Hard-drive magnets slam together hard enough to blood-blister skin and shatter into sharp chips. They also wipe media and bother pacemakers.
| What to look for | Usual figure |
|---|---|
| Phases | Three heavy wires |
| Sensors | Optional hall trio on a separate small plug, usually 5 V. Hard-drive spindles are sensorless. |
| Where | PC fans, drones, tool armatures, washer direct drive, scooter hubs, optical spindles |
Volts are electrical pressure, amps are how much current is flowing, and ohms are how hard the part resists that flow. A higher voltage than the part was built for is how salvage parts die on the bench. If a cell in the table says “read the stamp”, that stamp is the whole specification.
What people actually use it for
- Keep motor + controller as a pair
- Drone and tool motors with an RC ESC if the KV is in range
Leave this one when
You have only the spindle from a hard drive and no ESC experience. The magnets inside are the better prize.
Buying a new one is the better idea when
A documented hobby BLDC with a KV rating, if you are designing rather than reusing a pair.
How to tell if this one still works
Resistance between phases should be low and matched. Open one phase means a dead stator. Do not DC-power two phases except as a momentary twitch.
Step-by-step on the bench: Power a salvaged BLDC without magicTools you will want: Meter, The original controller or an ESC.
Words on this page
Short meanings, so the rest of the entry is readable if you are not already doing this every weekend.
- commutator
- The copper drum and brushes inside a brushed motor. They switch the coils as the shaft turns. A healthy two-wire motor of this type runs from a battery.
Where people actually find it
7 notes, most useful first. “Leave it” means the part is in that machine and you should not take it: it is dangerous, worn out, or only useful if you already know that exact repair.
| From | Call | How many | How often | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-scooter or hoverboard | Prize | 1–2 | always | The wheels. |
| Washing machine | Worth it | 1 | sometimes | Direct drive, behind the tub. |
| Cordless vacuum | Worth it | 1 | usually | The suction motor. |
| Cordless drill | Worth it | 1 | sometimes | Brushless tools. |
| Hard disk drive | Bonus | 1 | always | Under the platter stack. |
| CD / DVD / Blu-ray drive | Bonus | 1 | always | Spindle. |
| DVD or Blu-ray player | Bonus | 1 | always | Spindle. |
- In this particular machine
- Sensored hub motors. Voltage is the pack voltage.
- Where to look
- The wheels.
- How to get it out
- Unplug phase and hall. Label them.
- The condition to expect
- Good.
- In this particular machine
- A large outer-rotor motor. The inverter is part of it.
- Where to look
- Direct drive, behind the tub.
- How to get it out
- Take the harness and the board or leave both.
- The condition to expect
- Good, and not a two-wire motor.
- In this particular machine
- High speed, on the pack voltage.
- Where to look
- The suction motor.
- How to get it out
- Keep the controller.

- Good.

- Three phase plus halls.
- Where to look
- Brushless tools.
- How to get it out
- Keep the controller.
- The condition to expect
- Good.
- In this particular machine
- A sensorless spindle. Not a two-wire motor. The magnets in it are real but annoying to extract.
- Where to look
- Under the platter stack.
- How to get it out
- Leave it assembled unless you have an ESC experiment in mind.
- The condition to expect
- Usually fine, and still hard to drive.
- In this particular machine
- Sensorless, made to spin a disc, not to be a wheel motor.
- Where to look
- Spindle.
- How to get it out
- Leave it if you do not have a driver.
- The condition to expect
- Good and annoying.
