USB webcam
Also called UVC camera, laptop camera.
If a computer enumerates it as a camera, stop. That module is worth more than any chip inside it. Laptop internal cameras are often USB and often still UVC, sometimes on a tiny daughterboard with the microphone.
If you are new to this category
Some scrap is already a finished object: a webcam a computer recognizes, a barcode scanner that types numbers, an amplifier board between a jack and a speaker. Opening these to pull a chip almost always throws away the useful thing. If it still works when you plug it in, stop there.
Test the whole module before you unscrew it. A working webcam is worth more than the parts inside a dead one.
Plug the module in before you take it apart. A webcam the computer already sees, a scanner that types into a text box, or a speaker board that plays music is the finished part. The chips on the board are not an upgrade.
| What to look for | Usual figure |
|---|---|
| Interface | USB, 5 V. A raw MIPI camera from a phone is not this part and will not plug into a PC. |
| Microphone | Often on the same cable |
Volts are electrical pressure, amps are how much current is flowing, and ohms are how hard the part resists that flow. A higher voltage than the part was built for is how salvage parts die on the bench. If a cell in the table says “read the stamp”, that stamp is the whole specification.
What people actually use it for
- A camera
- A document stand
- Machine vision that does not need to be good
Leave this one when
The image is black because the lens flex was torn. A torn flex is the usual laptop-camera death.
Buying a new one is the better idea when
Never, if this one still enumerates. A new camera if you need an image that is actually sharp.
How to tell if this one still works
Plug it in. If the OS sees a camera, you are done.
Tools you will want: A computer.
Where people actually find it
3 notes, most useful first. “Leave it” means the part is in that machine and you should not take it: it is dangerous, worn out, or only useful if you already know that exact repair.
| From | Call | How many | How often | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Webcam | Prize | 1 | always | The whole thing. |
| Laptop | Worth it | 1 | sometimes | Top of the display bezel. |
| Mobile phone | Leave it | 1–3 | always | Camera modules. |
- In this particular machine
- UVC over USB.
- Where to look
- The whole thing.
- How to get it out
- Do not open a working one.
- The condition to expect
- Usually good.
- In this particular machine
- Often a USB camera on a short cable. Sometimes the microphone is with it.
- Where to look
- Top of the display bezel.
- How to get it out
- Test before you celebrate. Some are UVC, some need the original board.
- The condition to expect
- The flex is the usual casualty.
- In this particular machine
- MIPI CSI. Not USB.
- Where to look
- Camera modules.
- How to get it out
- Do not expect a PC to see it.
- The condition to expect
- Useless without the original SoC or a dedicated bridge you already know.
