Heat pipe
Also called laptop heatpipe, vapor chamber.
A sealed copper tube that moves heat by boiling a little fluid at one end and condensing at the other. Laptop and GPU coolers. It is not a copper rod you can cut, bend sharply, or drill. The working fluid is small but the vacuum is the whole function.
If you are new to this category
Rods, gears, belts, magnets, screws, and boxes. Printers are the best source of straight steel rod and toothed belts. Screws from a laptop are tiny and specific; a random screw in a laptop hole strips the plastic. Bag them by the machine they came from.
If two parts were meshing or riding together, keep them as a pair. A gear from one toy rarely fits a gear from another.
The two curved blocks on the steel plates are the magnets, and they are the prize. Slide them apart. Do not pry straight up. The flat coil on the arm is a short-travel motor. The platters are not a useful material, and on some drives they are glass.
Sheet metal and glass. Case steel, shattered platters, lamp glass, and magnet chips cut deeper than they look.
| What to look for | Usual figure |
|---|---|
| Orientation | Many still work flat. A sharp kink kills them. |
| Attachment | The cold plate is often soldered. Reusing the whole assembly on the original chip is realistic; redesigning the mount is not. |
Volts are electrical pressure, amps are how much current is flowing, and ohms are how hard the part resists that flow. A higher voltage than the part was built for is how salvage parts die on the bench. If a cell in the table says “read the stamp”, that stamp is the whole specification.
What people actually use it for
- Cooling the same class of chip
- Moving heat to a remote sink if you can clamp without crushing
Leave this one when
Any kink, any cut, any plan to saw it open to 'see the wick'.
Buying a new one is the better idea when
A heatsink sized for the watts you have, if you cannot keep this pipe intact.
How to tell if this one still works
Warm one end with a finger and feel the other. A dead pipe is just a slow copper bar; the live one equalizes faster than you expect. This is a comparison, not a spec.
Tools you will want: Patience.
Where people actually find it
2 notes, most useful first. “Leave it” means the part is in that machine and you should not take it: it is dangerous, worn out, or only useful if you already know that exact repair.
| From | Call | How many | How often | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laptop | Worth it | 1 | usually | From CPU to the fin stack. |
| Desktop PC | Bonus | 1 | sometimes | On a discrete graphics card. |
- In this particular machine
- A sealed copper pipe. Keep it straight.
- Where to look
- From CPU to the fin stack.
- How to get it out
- Release the screws in the numbered order so you do not warp the cold plate.
- The condition to expect
- Dead if kinked.
- In this particular machine
- A sealed copper pipe on the GPU cooler. Do not kink it.
- Where to look
- On a discrete graphics card.
- How to get it out
- Take the whole cooler.
- The condition to expect
- Good if it is not crushed.
